You Can Now Slide Into Someone’s DMs on Spotify
That includes artists.

Spotify may never beat the being-everything-but-a-music-app allegations.
The music service is rolling out a new feature that allows people to send DMs to each other and even artists, the company announced this week.
“For artists, authors, and creators, easier sharing means more word-of-mouth recommendations and helps create new fans,” the company said in a press release. “Our goal is to give users what they want and make those moments of connection more seamless and streamlined in the Spotify app.”

The feature will begin rolling out this week to free and premium users 16 and up; it will be available only on mobile devices right now. Latin and South America will get access this week, while the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the EU, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand will get it in the next few weeks, according to TechCrunch.
The new addition looks like any other kind of direct messaging feature, akin to an Instagram DM. You’ll hit the share icon on any song, audiobook, or podcast, pick the person you want to message and press send. Once that person accepts a message request, “you’ll be able to react with emojis, send texts, and seamlessly share Spotify content,” the press release said.

Why would Spotify introduce this feature? The internet had theories.
“What have you done now?” one TikTok creator said. “Why are we adding DMs to a musical app? Spotify, you’re a music app. You’re not a dating app. You’re not Tinder.”
“I just want to listen to my music in peace,” one X user said. “I have no interest in chatting with my friends. I think there are enough platforms to already do that. Let something be as it is.”
