Group 7 Was All About Promoting a Song This Whole Time

“In my pursuit to get my music heard, I’ve really been trying all of these different strategies,” Sophia James said.

If you’ve seen TikTok videos about being in the mysterious “Group 7,” congratulations , you’ve been chosen. Or at least your For You Page has. But what, exactly, does it mean to be a card-carrying member of this imaginary elite club? Don’t worry, we’ve got you.

It all started when singer Sophia James (a former American Idol contestant) posted a now-viral TikTok last week declaring, “If you are watching this video, you are in Group 7.” That’s it. No context. No instructions. Just a membership announcement if you were lucky enough to see the video organically.

That video, the seventh in a series, has nearly 20 million views and more than 125,000 comments, most from proud new recruits declaring allegiance to their group.

“Can you imagine not being Group 7,” one account asked in the comments of James' video.

“I heard Group 7 has really great skin…,” joked Aveeno, because of course even lotion brands want in.

“I KNEW deep in my soul that one day I would be a Group 7 girlie," another user wrote.

Turns out, the whole “Group 7” phenomenon wasn’t some cryptic internet prophecy. It was actually just a clever marketing stunt. James told the New York Times that she came up with the idea while trying to promote her new song, “So Unfair.”

“You just have to post no matter what it is — it’s really quantity over quality,” she said. “And so in my pursuit to get my music heard, I’ve really been trying all of these different strategies.”

She explained how the viral spark hit: “I posted one video, and I was like, ‘You know what? I’m just going to keep on doing it. I put the official sound for my new song in the foreground and I posted a video of my face with a caption saying, ‘This is the fourth video. So you’re group four.’ And then I just copy and pasted that, for group five, group six, group seven, and I almost didn’t post the seventh.”

That “almost” turned out to be the internet’s favorite plot twist.

“I woke up the next morning and you know, like Alakazam, the Group 7 video had hit the algorithm, and people just made it explode, and it became this hilarious, unexpected internet moment,” she said.

So, yes, all of this was just to promote a song, but honestly, there could be way more annoying ways to do that, so we’ll take it. Since then, Group 7 has become the internet’s most absurd social club. There’s no secret handshake, but there is a shared sense of superiority. Influencers, athletes, and musicians are all declaring their membership like it’s a status symbol.

Arya Starr is using this to also promote her song. Naomi Osaka is just happy to be here.

“We all just collectively decided that Group 7 were, like, the cool people, the It people, the baddies,” the pop culture influencer Jason Sappy said in a clip breaking down what it all means.  “You’re either in Group 7 or you’re no one, in my personal opinion, and I think that the internet would agree.”

On her website, James announced she’s hosting a IRL meetup of “Group 7” members in London this Friday.

Let’s remember: If you show up and no one knows who you are… you’re probably in Group 6.
