We Finally (Kinda) Know What Rachel Sennott’s New Show ‘I Love LA’ Is About
The series hits HBO on Nov. 2.

Just weeks before the show’s November premiere, the trailer for I Love LA, Rachel Sennott’s new HBO series, is finally here.
First teased in March 2024, the series marks Sennott’s biggest creative leap yet, as she wrote, produced, and stars in the show. It’s a natural evolution for the “it girl” actress who’s built a cult following through films like Bottoms, Shiva Baby, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and I Used to Be Funny. Now, she’s taking her signature brand of messy, relatable content to TV.
In I Love LA, Sennott plays Maia, a young talent manager deep in the throes “of a quarter-life crisis,” according to the New York Times.
Think Girls, but more influencers, or Insecure if Issa worked in the entertainment industry.
“When you get to the end of your 20s, you have to pick if you’re going to keep the life you have or if you’re going to blow it all up and start fresh,” Sennott told the Times.
Based on the trailer, Maia seems ready to do exactly that. Here’s what we know about the series and its themes.
Faking it Till You Make It
Career anxiety is the show’s lifeblood, it seems. Maia’s trying to climb the Hollywood ladder, but success keeps slipping through her manicured fingers. The trailer flashes through scenes of flashy parties, celebrity clients, and Maia delivering pep talks that sound like something off a vision board.
“Luck is just when preparation meets opportunity. Hustle until your idols become your rivals,” she says in the trailer, just seconds before she’s denied a promotion.
The show seems fascinated by a generation that’s hyper-ambitious yet perpetually unsure if the grind is even worth it. At one point, someone sneers, "Those kinds of people have, like, endless ambition,” as if it’s both a compliment and a curse.
A Friendship Rivalry?
Odessa A’zion co-stars as Tallulah, Maia’s old friend, who reappears unannounced and brings tension you can feel through the screen. Their dynamic is instantly fraught and clearly filled with nostalgia and loads of competition. Every interaction teeters between affection and passive-aggression.
“Surprise, you little bitch!” Tallulah yells.
We can’t wait to see how that plays out.
A Relationship on the Rocks
Josh Hutcherson plays Maia’s boyfriend, the kind of guy who seems perfect until he suddenly isn’t. Early in the trailer, he’s all smiles and support cheering Maia on. By the end, the cracks start to show and he’s wondering what happened to the woman he used to know.
“Do you realize that you are so different ever since Tallulah got here?”
