If you’ve been on TikTok lately and noticed couples in long-term relationships suddenly talking like they’re in swanky villa with 10 situationships and a lapel mic, you’re not alone.

“Can I pull you for a chat?” someone will whisper—to their husband or longtime boyfriend. It’s giving 100 percent delusion, so that can only mean it’s connected to Love Island USA.

It’s the time of the year when the popular Peacock reality dating show takes over everyone’s For You Page with big moments going viral, recaps and breakdowns, and even people acting as if they’re contestants.

How did a string of six words manage to make the internet cosplay like they’re about to be dumped from the island? Let’s break down the origin, evolution, and current unhinged usage of pulling someone "for a chat.”

@ivoothag i knew i liked huda a$$ for a reason😭😭, “hey baby can i pull you for a chat?” IKTR BBYGIRL😭💯💯🥹. #fyp #fypシ #tv #loveisland #loveislandusa #peacock #huda #jeremiah #bombshell ♬ original sound - Ivy🫧

What does it mean?

To the untrained ear, “pulling someone for a chat” just sounds like someone wants to talk. Simple enough, right? But in Love Island terms, it’s a little more loaded. It can mean a few different things: Maybe someone wants to flirt and see if there’s a vibe, maybe they’re trying to clear the air about where things stand, or maybe—sorry—it’s a soft launch to a breakup.

Basically, it’s never just a chat. It’s the prelude to a bombshell, a heartbreak, or a slow-motion makeout under string lights.

@victoria.alario and we all just accept it for the summer and then go back to talking regularly in the fall #fyp #forthegirls #loveisland #loveislandusa #loveislanduk #arianamadix @Love Island USA #peacock ♬ original sound - VICTORIA

Where did it originate?

“Pulling someone for a chat” was imported directly from the U.K. version of Love Island, where the phrase is an institution. Brits have been saying it for years, using it to tee up the most flirty conversations.

How did the phrase take over TikTok?

On TikTok, everyone is pulling their partner(s) for a chat. The trend “talking to my husband/boyfriend like we’re on Love Island” has racked up hundreds of videos of people dramatically reenacting the most unserious chats in the kitchen, on the couch, even in the car. Suddenly, everything’s a moment. A minor disagreement about who left the fridge open? Or who didn’t do the laundry? Cue the dramatic sign and infamous phrase.  People are parodying the show’s stiff body language, fake deep talks, and slow strolls to nowhere.
