Nicki Minaj Says She Used to Hate Viral ‘Did I Lie?’ Video: ‘Then I Gave In. It‘s Actually Really Funny’
Nicki addresses the immortal question, her next album, and more in a new interview with ‘Vogue Italia.’

Nicki Minaj hated her “Did I lie?” viral moment before she learned to love it.
In a new cover story from Vogue Italia, the rapper reveals that she wasn’t feeling the fan-favorite episode from 2018, which has stood the test of time and been memed into oblivion. The moment came via an interview with Elliott Wilson for his CRWN series with Tidal. Minaj, wearing head-to-toe Burberry plaid, shouted to a screaming crowd: “Did I lieeee? Did I lieeeee? Did I fucking lieeeeeeeee?”
In the Vogue Italia piece, when writer Filippo Ferrari mentions still makes him cry with laughter, Minaj responds: “I hate how I look in that video. When they started using it, I was like, ‘I’m going to block you!’ Then I gave in. It’s actually really funny.’”
“Did I lie?” has become the basis for countless memes since Nicki uttered the phrase seven years ago. Most recently, the video made the rounds during the release of Wicked, with the end of Nicki’s final “lie” turning into the high note from Cynthia Erivo’s rendition of the film’s climactic song, “Defying Gravity.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Nicki discusses her upcoming album, her first since 2023’s Pink Friday 2. “I have a lot of really strong songs, but I don’t want to rush,” she says. “I want the album to mean something, for the fans and for me. I will never be one of those people who just release songs for the sake of it.”
Still, she’s excited to return to the stage, she says, “for me, and for the Barbz.”
