Ice Spice Knew She Was a Lyricist the Whole Time

“I just let them say what they want and be happy with that.”

Don’t play with Isis Gaston’s pen. The Bronx rapper, better known as Ice Spice, just made it clear in a new Nylon profile that she’s always been confident in her lyrical chops, even if the internet hasn’t.

“I think my mistake was basically...letting people feel like they were right a little bit,” she said. “Like people were trying to say that I’m not a lyricist, and I just kind of went in with the attitude of ‘Yeah, they’re right. I’m not.’ But it’s just not true.”

Instead of wasting time going back and forth with her critics, she doubled down on her self-assurance.

“I figured I’d let you know that I definitely knew I was [a lyricist],” she said. “The whole time. I just let them say what they want and be happy with that.”

That confidence has carried her into new lanes as of late. She recently shared the screen with ASAP Rocky and Denzel Washington in Highest 2 Lowest and is headed underwater for a role in an upcoming SpongeBob movie. Still, she’s keeping her goals realistic.

“I mean, my dream is to be retired by 35, but is that even realistic?” Ice Spice joked. “Probably not. I’m American. We work until we die.”

Music remains the main event to Ms. Spice, though. After squashing her dumb beef with Latto, the pair released “Gyatt,” and she’s got more new music on the way with “Baddie Baddie,” a song that flips M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls.”
