Grimes has a new face tattoo. The musician and producer posted a selfie to Instagram this week revealing a swirling new design near her left eye, which some people joked looked like a ringworm.

In her caption, the Canadian singer born Claire Boucher explained that this wasn’t an impulsive move.

“Spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo,” she wrote. “But I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents, not even after the video lol.”

Grimes’ tattoo artist, Glyphomancer, is known for “cybersigilism,” a futuristic tattoo style that merges internet iconography with ancient tribal symbolism. Think sharp, alien-looking lines that resemble geometry. The aesthetic took off in the early 2020s among experimental digital artists and rave subcultures, eventually filtering into celebrity circles.

Cybersigilism tattoos typically cost between $500 and $5,000 depending on complexity, and have sparked debate for their eerie “AI-core” look.  Some critics call them dystopian or even culturally appropriative for borrowing from sacred symbols without context. Still, some don’t see it being that deep.

This isn’t Grimes first cybersigilism tattoo, and she isn’t the only singer to have one. People like Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, and Phoebe Bridgers have all dabbled in the cybersigilist aesthetic.

“I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work esp on face tats — there's a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo," Grimes wrote. "Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that's sort of under appreciated atm.”
