Just months after stepping into the storied role once held by Donatella Versace, creative director Dario Vitale is officially out at Versace, leaving fashion insiders stunned.

“Versace and its Chief Creative Officer, Dario Vitale, have mutually agreed to part ways effective from December 12th, 2025,” the brand said in a statement. “We would like to sincerely thank Dario for his outstanding contribution to the development of the brand’s creative strategy during this transition period, and we wish him all the very best in his future endeavors.”

The shake-up comes just as Prada Group finalized its acquisition of Versace for more than $1 billion, adding another layer of intrigue to Vitale’s exit.

Fashion enthusiasts have been saying that the move came way too soon.

“Dario out after one season is shocking," stylist Shannon Stokes tweeted. "There was a real sense of newness there.”

Fashion writer Shelton Boyd-Griffith echoed the sentiment.

“I stand by enjoying Dario Vitale’s debut collection and a few of his VIP customs," he tweeted. "The potential was right there, and yet again, a designer is cut loose before they’re given space to grow. Fashion is a brutal sport.”

“The thing that really annoys me is that a creative with such a strong point of view… is caught up in some administrative bullshit," he added.

Some believe the signs were visible from the start, with fashion editor Mario Abad pointing out Donatella didn’t attend Vitale’s first show.

“Nor did any execs from Prada Group,” he tweeted. "The signs were definitely there. He was doomed ever since the acquisition tbh.”

Now the rumor mill is spinning fast. Potential successors floated online range from Olivier Rousteing and Hedi Slimane to Francesco Risso and Casey Cadwallader, with some even calling for Donatella’s return.

The sudden vacancy has also reignited bigger conversations about creative leadership. Could this be a chance to see more women claim top spots? With Grace Wales Bonner recently making history at Hermès, momentum for change feels stronger than it’s ever been.
